How to take care of air plants

Air plants are great for beginners, or for those who do not have much time to take care of plants. Their leaves and stems are formed by small scales called trichomes, which are like complex hairs that are formed by the epidermis of the plants.

Watering air plants is the easiest thing. Trichomes absorb moisture, so you only have to spray them a couple of times a week. Soaking helps revive dry plants. Submerge the whole plant for 1 to 3 hours. Use this method once a week or after a period of neglect.

How to grow air plants

To take care of air plants is very easy, but some of them will take a long, long time grow and eventually flower, and maybe have pups. Fertilize air plants once or twice a month with a water-soluble orchid or tillandsia fertilizer, following package instructions for dilution. Use the misting or dunking method.

  • The room must be ventilated often to renew the oxygen and other nutrients that air plants need.
  • During rainy seasons the humidity in the air will keep them moist. Soaking them once a week will be enough for them. During dry seasons they will need a daily dose of water mist.
  • Add fertilizer to the water once a month in spring and summer.
  • They like high temperatures but usually prefer shade, except for some species such as T. lindeniiand T. cyanea  that need more light, but never direct sun.
  • They do not support temperatures below 45º C.
